Now this is an image I'd like to see. Every roof at least 50% green.

Imagine flying over a city and all you see is green. The land on which each building is constructed is just transposed to its roof. There's still much of the same amount of outdoor space - it's just at different elevations.

Lightweight and resiliant, green roofs have come a long way and are becoming increasingly popular. There already exist some pretty tasty green roofs - the building next to Baker Street station being a prime example. Historically the main issues are wind, weight and nutrition, Even here, plants can help - creating a green barrier can make the roof a more pleasant place to spend time acting as a windbreak.

Here are some of London's best green roofs. Some you can visit, some you can't - hopefully one day these won't be anyhting special. If you know of any better ones, send them my way and I'll include them here.
